Brachiopods have been inhabiting the oceans of this world for over 530 million years. 250 million years ago in the Permian, 95 percent of brachiopod species disappeared in the largest mass extinction in Earth's history. Only about 375 species of this group of animals still exist. The hole in the larger flap through which the arm grows for anchoring to the seabed is typical of these double shells.
