The Dekan Trapp, a 50,000 square kilometer basalt cover in India today, was formed by volcanism 66 million years ago. It is believed that the original extent of the lava surface was up to 1.5 million square kilometers and that this volcanism was partly responsible, if not entirely, for the extinction of the dinosaurs at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary. Gas cavities enclosed in this lava, some of which are huge, have been filled with fantastic crystal formations of zeolite minerals over millions of years. The steps are mostly recovered during quarry work, but also, for example, during well construction work, during which huge crystal caverns were documented in the 2010s to 13ths.
