Conchs feed mainly on echinoderms and their prey include the coral-eating crown-of-thorns starfish. Their salivary glands produce free sulfuric acid, which can be used to paralyze the prey and, if necessary, soften the calcareous skeleton. The shells of the conch can be up to fifty centimeters long and all specimens from Mediterranean populations are protected under the Federal Species Protection Ordinance.
