Bismuth is one of the rarest elements on earth. These skeletal crystals are pulled from a melt that resolidifies at temperatures below 271.4 degrees Celsius. The liquid metal has to be constantly examined for the smallest impurities under laboratory conditions, since even a few atoms of foreign material impair crystal growth. The beautiful colorful surface coloration is caused by an immediate oxidation of the crystal surface during cooling.
